Middle School
Native Youth Community Project
In the fall of 2016, the Coeur d’ Alene Tribe’s Department of Education was awarded a four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Indian Education. The Native Youth Community Project, also known as NYCP, provides a holistic program aimed at increasing college and career success of middle school students on the Coeur d’Alene Reservation.
In partnership with the Plummer/Worley School District, Coeur d’Alene Tribal School, local families, Tribal leaders and program staff, community members and local colleges and universities, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s Department of Education has designed and implemented a quality college and career readiness program that includes an in- and after-school component at both schools.
NYCP uses a holistic approach to college and career readiness by building a healthy living component into the program that incorporates social/emotional components with culture based creative arts, nutrition and physical activities.
What We Do
College Preparation
The college preparation program is designed to give students a “college mindset” by exposing them to a variety of college themed activities. Students visit local colleges and attend college fairs throughout the school year. During the summer months, students have an opportunity to attend on-campus experiences such as college leadership camp.
Career Development
Career development activities include attending career fairs, a pre-employment program and job search, and resume writing and mock interviews. Summer internships and job shadowing are available to 8th graders, as well.
School Success
The School Success program includes physical fitness, nutrition and a culture based creative arts program. A healthy living component, designed to help support students in their developing stages of middle school are all combine to give students a well balanced learning experience. NYCP also provides advising, mentoring, tutoring and monitoring students for school success.
Who we Serve
The Native Youth Community Project serves all middle school students, grades 6-8, attending school at the Plummer/Worley School District and the Coeur d’Alene Tribal School.
